Happy Birthday, Marty!

My eldest son, Marty, turns eight years old today. It seems like he’s been with us forever, and at the same time it just can’t already have been that long. As I told him last night, he’s taught me a great deal about both being a father and being myself, and I’m grateful to have such a wonderful kid in …

Sweet Home, Wisconsin

Fellow Wisconsin son Jim Muraco asked me to put in a plug for his latest film It’s My House. It’s a documentary about strange and cool houses in the Midwest, mostly in Wisconsin and particularly in Milwaukee. Think of it as Cribs: Brewtown. Or not–I haven’t seen the movie yet myself. With luck, it’ll be ready in January, a perfect …

Give Thanks

One thing that having kids–especially quadruplets–pounds into my skull is the value of gratitude. There’s so much to be thankful for in my life, no matter what struggles I may have, and the good outshines the bad like the sun outdoes the moon at noon. I’m always at my happiest when I think more on what I have than what …

A Wild Weekend

I had an amazing weekend, a strange combination of family, politics, football, drama, and even games.

Marty’s Oliver

My eldest son Marty is appearing in his first-ever play this weekend–the Kids Fun and Drama production of Oliver!–as Orphan/Urchin #1. He sings in the chorus and even has a few lines. As you might imagine, Ann and I are proud as can be. If you’re in the area, the show is November 16—18 at 7 PM and November 19 …

A Good Turnout

Yesterday, I got the kids to school and then reported in to the Democratic HQ here in Beloit. They sent me out on a lit drop, and I hit every house in the northern part of the Town of Beloit with door hangers that reminded people just where their polling place was.

Go Vote

I spent the day Saturday canvassing part of one of the wards here in Beloit with my eldest son, on behalf of the local Democratic Party. We had a wonderful time, despite the weather. We skipped lunch and walked for over four hours before we finished our assignment, and he barely complained a peep because he knew we were doing …

Helping Out

I’m going to be lending a hand at the Democratic HQ here in Beloit on this Saturday and on Election Day for as much as I can. I’ve done this just about every election cycle I’ve been in Wisconsin since I was able to walk, even the year the quads were born. If anyone in the area would like to …

Happy Halloween!

A happy All Hallows’ Eve to you all. We’re celebrating tonight with the traditional trick or treating. The quads plan to dress up at Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. My wife will be the Wicked Witch of the West. Our eldest will be a wizard of a different kind: Harry Potter. Me, I’ll hand out …

A Friend in Need

This may not interest most of you, but I know that some folks local to me read this blog too. One of my stepbrother Dan Schooff’s best friends is Steve Shea, and Steve’s wife Sallie is in serious trouble. You can read the details after the break, but the upshot is that Sallie needs a lung transplant. Dan and his …
