As you say, Munchkin may not be for everybody, but it's still a far more solid game than Monopoly in terms of design and (for me and my kids, at least) fun. Lords of Waterdeep is a great game too. If I started to list every game that even just Hasbro/Wizards puts out that is better than Monopoly, my fingers would cramp before I was done.

You just pushed Munchkin over Monopoly? I'll take Monopoloy over that topple-the-leader slogfest any day of the week. While Monopololy leaves some results to chance, Munchkin brings out the worst kind of lynch mob mentality I have ever seen. Why not recomend Lords of Waterdeep?

I haven't played Monopoly since I was a kid, but you are right of course about the 'snowball' effect; I remember a few other boardgames from that time with the same issue. Maybe if there were some game-levelling disasters like Chance cards or renamed spaces like "Superstorm wipes out your most valuable properties" or IRS Audit: lose all cash and Pay for $XX next X rounds" or "Housing Bubble: your income is halved." ;-)

A neat thought experiment would be to come up with "catchup" rules for Monopoly that allow players to stay engaged but that make sense within the realm of the game. Player with the most properties gets hit with anti-trust penalty? Losing player has a chance to inherit unclaimed properties? Properties with hotels/houses on them that do not see a lot of activity start to "deteriorate" and you either pay for maintenance or start to lose houses?

1) It's not an encyclopedia entry or an academic paper. It's a blog post. Of course it's my opinion.

However, if I had to use a yardstick to measure this with, I'd go with the volume of responses I've gotten around the net from the article, and roughly 90% of them agree with my opinion. I'd also fall back on the many conversations I've had with designers at Hasbro and beyond that have tried to improve the game and not succeeded to their satisfaction.

2) Games model and comment upon reality in the way that just about any other form of entertainment does. They can have meaning in the same way that Toy Story or The Sun Also Rises does, and they can impart that to the players.

It's a long, ridiculous leap to go from there to a sinister kind of influence bordering on mind control though. Games deserve the same kinds of protections as other forms of artistic expression. (I think we're on the same side here, but I want to be clear about where I stand.)

3) I'm all for players adding house rules. That's how many game designers get started. I didn't say that it was a bad thing to attempt, just that most such attempts fail when it comes to Monopoly. You can check out the countless variants on the game that don't do much to improve it—and the comments I received on Twitter from those who've worked on electronic versions of the game—as some measure of proof of that.

My concerns here are twofold. First, the article comes across not as your opinion, but fact. Quotes like this are also very problematic for me. "This is not, however, fun for anyone at the table. Even most winners get bored after a while." Unless you've done some sort of extensive testing to back up this claim, this is no more than your opinion, passed off as fact. Indeed, the fact that it is one of the world's most popular games probably means that many people enjoy playing it.
My second concern is that reading deeper meaning into entertainment often leads down roads we'd rather not go. As an example, look at the D&D outcry in the mid 80's, the GTA and Magic outcries in the 90's, and pretty much every controversy manufactured today. All of those start with the idea that game's mechanics or story trappings will somehow transfer over into the real lives of their participants.
As a final note, players adding in their own rules does not necessarily mean that a game is boring or is not worth playing. That's like me writing a post and saying Munchkin is a terrible game because my friends and I added some additional rules to change things up after playing it multiple times.

If you love it, I don't want to rain on that. You get to like what you like. I'll take issue with the idea that games aren't worth reading into deeper though. They model many things, and they impart lessons, whether intended by the designer or not.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion that Monopoly isn't a fun game. I think it's a classic game that gets by because millions of people find it enjoyable to play. The comments in your post and in the comments section about some larger life lessons to be learned from a game are silly. It's a game, and trying to read deeper meaning into it will of course lead to equally silly results.

I have had great fun with Monopoly using player-designed Chance cards. Basically, you throw away all the Chance and Community Chest cards, and the players get to put in any rules they want (provided they have equal effects on all players, of course)on a half dozen cards each which are shuffled.

When I was a child I found the design and color scheme utterly fascinating. Despite the fact that it is a real bore. The game used to have an alternative "fast play" rule set which made it more fun - basically half the property cards were dealt out, and play was time-limited. I was constantly inventing alternative rules and trying to dragoon people into playing.
