Thanks for the understanding, Michael. I can see your point, and if you see something like that, I'd rather you speak up and give me the chance to clarify rather than keep such thoughts silent.

If you stick around—or if you read through the past posts—I think you'll see the site isn't about garish self-aggrandizement. True, it's my site and I use it to promote my work, but that's not all it's for by a long, long way.

Next time, I'll try to provide a bit more context for tricky posts like this one. As you note, everyone who stops by to read a post here has a first time. For a bit of immediate context, here's my report on Gary's funeral.

I'll grant you your intentions. However, perhaps you should have adhered to the little voice that indicated made you hesitate in the first place.

I'm not looking to censor you or attack you. I'm just an anonymous person that started reading your blog because it was referenced on others I was reading. I think you could have presented the same content with better reverence. That's all.

I didn't know Gary or anyone in his family. I was just one of those early geeks from Wisconsin that remembers camping out at Jackson Park to play at Parkside and going to the mini-cons at the Lake Como elementary (with those itty-bitty urinals).

Your post, though apparently not intended, appears to the casual reader of your blog very much in line with today's shallow look-at-me celebrity shmooze-fest we all see to often. I'm certain the frequent reader of your blog didn't see it that way.

I'll admit I hesitated a moment before posting that bit. Gary's funeral was a strange conglomeration of people and emotions for me. Although it was a horrible occasion, I was pleased to see so many old friends (both his and mine) in one place. The fact that the reception afterward was in a place where I went to my first game convention added to that dissonance—especially when so many people then sat down and played games.

As many people, including Gary's family have said, he would have wanted it that way.

When I posted my earlier note about Gary's funeral, I wanted to share the day with people who couldn't be there, from the only perspective I could: my own. The photos help illustrate the event. Not everyone who stops by the site knows what I look like—especially in a suit, which I rarely rare—so I thought I should point myself out.

You're welcome to disagree, of course.
