The funeral was today, and I missed it. My father told me not to make the 16-hour round trip but instead plan to come out for an Irish wake planned for this spring. I know he would have preferred that.

It was hard not being there, but I took a moment at the time of the ceremony to contemplate my grandfather’s life and how much he meant to me and everyone else in my family. We’ll miss him terribly, but he had a hard time his last few months, and at least he’s free of that. He lived a long, wonderful life and met a peaceful end, surrounded by his family. We should all be so fortunate.
