Magic: The Gathering

Magic: The Gathering #1 came out on Wednesday, and the reviews are streaming in. Most people seem to like it a lot. Here are details from a few of the kinder reviews.

CNN’s Geek Out! made the book its pick of the week.

If you’re looking for something new this week, or just want to dip your toe in and see what the hell all these “Magic” players are always on about, think about giving “Magic: The Gathering #1” a shot.

MTV Geek says the book “Deals a Winning Hand.”

[F]ull of plenty of propulsive action and a forward, breakneck pace that doesn’t pause for long before jumping to the next set piece… What will distinguish M:TG is its ability to make Dack an engaging lead, and luckily, Matt Forbeck does just that.

At Civilian Reader, Stefan enjoyed the book too.

Forbeck gives us a good introduction to the series and world(s), and despite being entirely unfamiliar with the franchise, I felt quite at home.

Kitty’s Pryde gives the book 4 out of 5 stars.

The script is solid. Good pacing and with a sense of fun… [M]akes for good reading.

At Muliversity Comics, Walter Richardson gives it 7 out of 10.

[T]he first issue of Magic: The Gathering is a pretty good read. Writer Matt Forbeck gives us all the information we need while still keeping things exciting… It’s fun, exciting, and flat-out looks great. My accolades to the entire team for proving my expectations quite wrong.

If you go out and grab or download it, I hope you enjoy it too.

Magic: The Gathering

The first issue of the Magic: The Gathering comic book I’m writing for IDW hits stores today. Be sure to hustle down to your local comic shop to grab yourself a copy, which comes with a playable, alternate-art card for the bestselling Magic: The Gathering collectible card game, on which the comic is based.

If you don’t want/need the card or just prefer your comics in a less tangible format, you can also order the comic through comiXology and download it immediately. You can then read it through your web browser or on your iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire device.

I’m thrilled to be involved with this book. I’ve known about Magic since before it was published back in 1993, and I’ve watched it grow into a global phenomenon. I’ve also been pals with the folks at IDW since they were all back with WildStorm Productions in the day, and it’s wonderful to be working with them on comics again.

To top it all off, the art team on this book is amazing. Martin Cóccolo‘s pencils and inks make the book even better than it looked in my head when I was writing it, and J. Edwin Stevens‘s color bring it all to stunning life. Big thanks also to my editors at IDW — Carlos Guzman, John Barber, and Denton Tipton — for juggling all three of us plus Wizards of the Coast to make this the best book it can be.

As a taste, I’ve embedded a free preview of the first several pages of the book for you to check out.

Magic: The Gathering

As ICv2.com reports today, the Magic: The Gathering comic I’m writing for IDW has been pushed back about five weeks. Rather than having the first issue ship on December 28, it’s now slated to be in stores on February 1. The given reason is “unforeseen printing challenges.”

Creatively, I’ve had a great time working on the series. I’ve seen proofs for the completed first issue, and the artist (Martin Cóccolo) and colorist (J. Edwin Steven) have created something beautiful and fun and even better than I imagined it all in my head. While I hate to see it delayed, it clearly falls under the banner of “getting it done right,” so I can’t complain, and once you see the end results, I don’t think anyone else will either.

Magic: The Gathering

IDW recently released new images for the Magic: The Gathering comic I’m writing. First, here’s the exclusive card that will come with issue #2: “Faithless Looting.” It features the main cover art from the same issue — by the incredible Karl Kopinski — but one of the cool things about it is that the card’s rules haven’t appeared anywhere yet.

The cards that come with the comics are alternate art versions those that are already available for the game — or soon will be — so that we know they fit well with the game. While we want collectors to buy the comic and grab the card too, we don’t want players to feel like they have no choice but to pay for several copies of the comic just to get the card for their playing deck. The regular “Faithless Looting” card will appear in the Dark Ascension block of cards to be released in February, but the comic will be out at the end of January, a few days ahead of that.

IDW also released the cover image for issue #3. This one’s by Christopher Moeller, who provided one of the alternate covers for issue #1. I’ve been a fan of Christopher’s work for years, and it’s a real thrill to see his images grace the covers of my books. That’s our hero Dack Fayden there, facing off against a nasty vampire. Hope he survives it.

Magic: The Gathering

Over the past week, IDW released two more covers for the Magic: The Gathering comic book series I’m writing for them. The first is by Christopher Moeller, whose artwork I’ve loved for years. It features our hero, Dack Fayden, running for his life.

This is, I believe, the third cover for the Magic: The Gathering #1. Like many publishers, IDW gives out copies of its comics with rare variant covers to retailers who buy lots of copies of the book. This one is the rarest of the lot, and like the regular versions it should be in stores and on e-readers in December.

Believe it or not, Martín Cóccolo’s interiors are just as fantastic as the covers. Martín’s a master of both perspective and anatomy, and he breathes real life into the characters he draws. It’s been wonderful watching him turn my script into an actual comic, and I cannot wait for you all to see the finished book when it comes out.

IDW also released the cover for Magic: The Gathering #2, which comes out one month later, in January 2012. This again features Dack, but this time he’s just burst through a window, which means he’s entering a scene rather than leaving.

Karl Kopinski created the art for this one. Karl’s done a lot of great work for Games Workshop (for which I’ve written many things) and for Osprey Publishing, which owns Angry Robot, the publisher of my original novels. You can see here just how talented he is. I recently turned in the second draft of the script for issue #2, and Karl’s image captures one of the early scenes in it perfectly.

Magic: The Gathering

I just spotted one of the alternate covers for the first issue of the Magic: The Gathering comic I’m writing for IDW. This one’s by the talented Eric Deschamps, and it depicts the hero of the tale — Dack Fayden — relieving a young lady of something valuable. Knowing him, it’s probably magical too.

The book’s scheduled to ship in December, and I can’t wait for you to read it. I just wrapped up my first draft on issue #2, and I’m already looking ahead to the rest of the series.

Magic: The Gathering

Yesterday, IDW released its solicitations for its comics coming out in December. Among many other amazing things, this contained more details on the first issue of the Magic: The Gathering comic book I’m writing for them. While most solicitations are kept intentionally vague, it does reveal a few cool new bits about the book, including the names of the superstar artists working on variant covers: Eric Deschamps and Christopher Moeller.

IDW’s really pulling out the stops to get some top artistic talent on the book, and I cannot wait to see their efforts. I’m proud to be in such excellent company, even if it means I’ll have to work twice as hard to keep up!

Look for the full text of the solicitation after the break:

Magic: The Gathering

Earlier today, IDW announced that it is publishing a brand-new series of comic books based on Magic: The Gathering, the original, bestselling collectible card game from Wizards of the Coast. It’s being illustrated by the fantastic Martin Cóccolo, and the excellent Denton Tipton is editing it. Most amazing of all is that I’m writing it.

This is the first comic I’ve written since the Blood Bowl series I handled for Boom! Studios, and I’m loving it. Writing a comic is the most structured sort of prose challenge around, but it’s so satisfying to see a talented artist bring the images I describe to life.

This isn’t, though, the first time I’ve been involved with a Magic: The Gathering comic. Way back in 1996, I wrote backup material for Fallen Angel, a Magic comic from Acclaim Comics written by Nancy Collins. This time around, though, I’m handling the main event, and I can’t wait for you all to read it.

Here’s the press release, in full:
