IAMTW

Ghosts of Ascalon, the Guild Wars book I wrote with Jeff Grubb, just picked up a nomination for the Scribe Award for Best Speculative Original. The International Media Tie-In Writers (IAMTW) gives out the Scribe Awards at Comic-Con every year to the best in tie-in novels of the past year. In the past, the judges have nominated my Mutant Chronicles and Knights of the Silver Dragon: Prophecy of the Dragons novels, and Mutant Chronicles won the Best Game-Related Adapted novel award in 2009.

This time around, Ghosts of Ascalon is up against some stiff competition in its category from David Mack, Sean Williams, Keith R. A. DeCandido, and Nathan Long. I don’t know what the book’s chances of winning are, but I’m proud to be in the company of such great authors. It really is an honor just to have the book nominated.

Be sure to check out the IAMTW blog for a full list of the nominations in each category, plus the naming of Peter David as this year’s grandmaster. Congratulations to Peter and all the rest of the nominees!

Jonny Nexus — he of Game Night fame — recently picked up Tied-In, the first book about tie-in novels from the IAMTW. He likes it a lot so far, but then he segues into naming his favorite tie-in novel of all time: Grease by Ron De Cristoforo.

I haven’t thought about it for years, but I read lots of these when I was a kid. My favorite at the time was a Welcome Back, Kotter novel by William Johnston. How about you? What’s your favorite?

I mentioned before that the IAMTW put out an excellent e-book entitled Tied In: The Business, History and Craft of Media Tie-In Writing. Besides being out for the Kindle and other e-book formats, it’s also now available as a trade paperback. If you’re a fan of tie-ins and would like to know about how they make their way to you, be sure to pick it up.

The IAMTW has just released its first book, Tied In: The Business, History and Craft of Media Tie-In Writing. Edited by Lee Goldberg, the book features essays about all aspects of writing tie-in novels from Donald Bain, Max Allan Collins, Tod Goldberg, Elizabeth Massie, William C. Dietz, Aaron Rosenberg, Paul Kupperberg, Jeff Mariotte, Raymond Benson, Robert Greenberger, David Spencer, Greg Cox, Burl Barer, Jeff Ayers, Nancy Holder, Brandie Tarvin, Alina Adams and William Rabkin. There should be a hard-copy version available soon, but in the meantime you can pick up the Kindle version or other ebook versions for your e-reader for the low price of $2.99.

Keep your ear to the ground for the results of the IATMW’s Scribe Awards too. They’ll be given out Friday night at Comic-Con.

3756026158_d8d665a196.jpgAt Comic-Con, the IAMTW announced the results of its annual Scribe Awards. As you might recall, my novelization of the Mutant Chronicles film was nominated for Speculative Fiction, Best Novel, Adapted. It lost out to Bob Greenberger‘s excellent Hellboy II novelization, but I got to sit between Bob and Jim Rollins on the panel. They both won awards, and basking in their reflected glow took the sting right out of the loss.

It really was an honor to sit on stage with all the nominees who could make it to Comic-Con, many of whom I met there in person for the first time. Keith R. A. DeCandido gave a clever Grandmaster acceptance speech, and Lee Goldberg did yeoman’s work leading the post-ceremony panel. We had lots of different people on the panel, and it’s not easy to come up with enough great questions for everyone to chip in on, but he handled it well.

The photo here comes from Lee’s Flickr set of the event. Check out the rest of the pictures there, and see below for the full awards results.

The IAMTW just announced the nominees for its 2009 Scribe Awards, which are for the best tie-novels of the year. The awards committees were kind enough to nominate my Mutant Chronicles novelization for two awards: Best Speculative Fiction Adapted and Special Gaming Scribe — Best Adapted.

See below for the full list nominees, many of which were written by good friends of mine (including fellow Alliterate member Steve Sullivan), and all of which are by excellent and talented writers. Congratulations to them all, and good luck to them in the final round—even those who are up against me! I feel blessed to be in such fantastic company, and this should make Comic-Con and Gen Con that much more fun. Continue reading »

Fellow IAMTW member and comic-book legend Paul Kupperberg recently asked a bunch of us to tell him which superhero we’d like to write a novel about and what kind of story we would tell. Oh, and did we have any horror stories about such books to tell?

You can see my answer—along with those of Richard Lee Byers, Greg Cox, Russell Davis, Keith R.A. DeCandido, David Mack, Jeff Mariotte, Yvonne Navarro, David Seidman, James Swallow, Brandie Tarvin, and J. Steven York—in Paul’s latest “Capes, Cowls, and Costumes” column on Bookgasm.

At Comic-Con last weekend, the IAMTW announced the winners of its second annual Scribes Awards. See below for the list of nominees and winners in each category.

I served on the Young Adult jury this year, and I enjoyed every one of the books I read. Every volunteer job should be so pleasurable.

Congratulations to all the winners, especially to my friend and fellow Eberron scribe Paul Crilley for picking up the inaugural Best Game-Related Original award!
