Guild Wars

My iPhone 4 arrived Wednesday, and I spent a lot of time poking around in it. One thing I discovered is that Guild Wars: Ghosts of Ascalon is available for pre-order through iBooks. The best part about it is that you can download a free sample of the book right now. As a bonus, it goes all the way into Chapter Three, much farther along than the free PDF you can download elsewhere. If you have an iPhone 4, be sure to check it out.

Jeff Grubb — my co-writer for Guild Wars: Ghosts of Ascalon — has been all over the place these days, promoting the book. Since it’s due to hit shelves on July 27, less than two weeks away, now’s the time, and I appreciate the help.

ArenaNet updated their page for the book. Head over there, and you can read a PDF of the first chapter of the book for free. You can also pick up a copy of a map of the world of Tyria that appears in the front of the book. On top of that, they updated the book’s FAQ page, on which they reveal that the book will be translated and published in German, French, Russian, and Italian, as well as the original English.

Jeff also wrote a blog post for ArenaNet on writing the book. Besides details about the book, he also reveals the name of the second book in the series (Edge of Destiny) and the name of its author — the founder of my writing group, the Alliterates: J. Robert King. As a bonus, at the bottom of that page, you can get free Ghosts of Ascalon wallpaper for your computer desktop in a wide variety of resolutions.

Massively interviewed Jeff about the book, and he gave out all sorts of good details about it. Shawn Shuster of Massively had a chance to read the book before the interview, and he offered up a kind review of it too.

Jeff also spoke with Mike Fahey at Kotaku, who’d also had a chance to read the book. Mike clearly enjoyed the book, calling out the fact that “It’s character-driven history.” In the course of the interview, Jeff also reveals that “We’ve taken characters out of the book that appear in the game, and there are figures from the game that appear in the book. There’s a strong connection between the two.”

Jeff went on to speak with Ten Ton Hammer about the book too. In his interview with them, he talks a bit about how the book worked out, and he also mentions Rob King’s book again, which I can’t wait to read.

Earlier this month, I decided I was going to skip Comic-Con this year. I love the show, and I’ll miss seeing all of my friends there. However, Gen Con was bumped up a week, so there’s only a week and a half between it and Comic-Con this summer. I’m going to be spending a good part of that time in a cabin in the woods with my family instead. As a bonus, Ann and the kids are coming down to Gen Con for a couple days too so they can play games and “see Daddy be famous.”

If you’re going to Comic-Con, though, be sure to stop by the NCSoft booth (#5345) to check out Guild Wars 2: Ghosts of Ascalon. They’re giving away a limited number of copies of the book, and my co-author Jeff Grubb will be on hand to sign them, along with cover artist Rich Anderson. This happens Friday, July 23, from 1 PM to 1:45 PM and Saturday, July 24, from 1 PM to 1:45 PM. The book isn’t due in stores until the following week, but the lucky few can get it at Comic-Con for free!

Guild Wars

Angry Robot just released its upcoming publishing schedule all the way up to the middle of 2011. This includes my first two original novels, Amortals and Vegas Knights. According to this, Amortals will hit the UK in November 2010, and North America in January of 2011. Vegas Knights storms the UK in March 2011 and North America in April 2011.

To hold you over until then, be sure to look for Guild Wars 2: Ghosts of Ascalon by Jeff Grubb and me. It’s due out on July 27, only three weeks away! An advance proof of the book arrived at my door today, and it looks pretty snazzy. This should mean other copies are on their way to reviewers too. I can’t wait to see the real thing.

Guild Wars

Simon & Shuster has posted a good chunk of the first chapter of Guild Wars 2: Ghosts of Ascalon on its website. The same page also states that the book will be released on or around July 27, 2010. That means it’s less than a month until the book is available to you. Pre-orders are open right now, though, so you can plunk down your money for a hardcopy or an e-book version whenever you like. Can’t wait for you to read it!

Over on Booklife, Jeremy L. C. Jones is running a series of short author interviews about collaborating on fiction. In the latest installment, he hit Jeff Grubb and me up to chat about how we worked together on our upcoming novel Ghosts of Ascalon, based on the Guild Wars 2 MMO. Be sure to check it out.

Guild Wars

Earlier today, I spotted the full cover for Ghosts of Ascalon on the official Guild Wars 2 wiki. Speaking of which, if you’re at all interested in learning more about the upcoming Guild Wars 2 MMO, that wiki is a great place to find a solid collection of the bits that have been announced so far. The entry on the novel, for instance, is filled with good stuff.

While you’re at it, be sure to check out the newly launched Guild Wars 2 blog. The game’s actual designers are peeling back all sorts of veils there with every entry.

Anyhow, the cover for the novel looks fantastic, and the image I found includes not only the front cover but the spine and back cover, along with all the teaser text too. I cannot wait to see this thing on shelves and to hold an actual copy in my hands.

Soon. Soon.

Guild Wars

More news about my upcoming Guild Wars 2 novel is finally official. The book is done and should be out sometime this summer. The title has been changed from Fall of Ascalon to the far better Ghosts of Ascalon, which rings truer on multiple levels.

The biggest change is the addition of a co-author to the marquee: Jeff Grubb. Jeff’s a fellow member of my Alliterates writers group — although he’s in the Seattle branch, while I’m part of the Wisconsin lineup. I’ve known him since way back when I used to run RPGA events for his Marvel Superheroes Roleplaying Game at Gen Con, in the mist-shrouded past of the mid-’80s.

According to the official FAQ about the book:

As one of the chief game designers and writers of Guild Wars 2, Jeff Grubb has been heavily involved in working with Matt Forbeck to integrate Guild Wars 2 lore into the narrative of the book. As the editorial direction of Ghosts of Ascalon progressed, it became apparent that Jeff’s contributions to the novel merited his inclusion as a coauthor.

As one of the two in-house lore masters for Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who knows the game and its world better than Jeff. Couple that with the fact that he’s a fantastic writer with over a dozen previous novels under his belt, and you can guess at how much his contributions meant to this book. I can’t wait for you to read it.

P.S. Massively and Kotaku have both picked up on the story, and so far the reaction seems good.

The savvy souls at ArenaNet managed to capture many of the panels the held at PAX on video. Better yet, they posted them on YouTube!

They recorded one panel I was on with Will McDermott and Eric Flannum, speaking about my upcoming novel based on Guild Wars 2. It’s in two parts, and you can see each below. This took place at 1:30 PM Pacific Time on September 5, 2009. Considering the long night before and the fact I was starting to fall ill that morning, I think I managed to be mostly articulate.

Check them out here, or go to YouTube to see Part 1 and Part 2 larger and in HD.

I had a fantastic time at PAX (the Penny Arcade Expo) last weekend. Unfortunately, since then I’ve been laid up with some evil con crud, and that’s substantially changed a few things in my schedule.

Allow me to explain.
