Tomorrow Is Yesterday, the first game and comic-book shop I regularly shopped at as a kid, went under late last year. I had heard that they and Black Hawk Hobby Distributors, which were both owned by the same people, were having troubles last year, but it had been a while since I’d been able to get down to Rockford, Illinois, to visit.

Today, I had to run down to Rockford to trade in my son Pat’s violin for a larger one from Asher’s Violin Shop. He’s grown, and needs the next size up. On my way back, I tried to stop by Tomorrow Is Yesterday and found that Top Cut Comics had replaced it.

The new owners have done a fine job with the place, although they place a lot more emphasis on their Pokémon league and tournaments. They cleared out nearly half the store for gaming tables, and they had a bunch of kids in there playing when I stopped by. I’ll miss the old place and the people who ran it, but hopefully Top Cut will be around to soldier on in their stead for years to come.

  1. Wow! I didn’t know they went under. Lot of memories. My first dice/dice bag… first rpg’s, d&d, v&v, Traveler, Paranoia. First comic subscription. First used book purchase. hope Kim and the gang is doing ok!

  3. I grew up in Rockford and moved away in 2000. My brother and I used to visit that shop many times in our youth. I went back to Rockford this weekend for a relay race. After the race I thought it would be awesome to visit Tomorrow is Yesterday on my way home. I arrived to find a place called Top-Cut Comics. It has some cool things and has a birthday wheel just like the old store had, but ultimately it was not the same. It had less comics and less memorabilia. I will probably not go back and will forever miss the old store.

    • Thanks for the memories, David. It was a great store, and I miss it too.

    • Just to let you know, there’s a reason there is less stuff. In the final years of Tomorrow is Yesterday, we were constantly having 50% off sales on our merchandise to try and stay afloat. It ravaged our stock and ultimately wasn’t enough to keep us from going under. It’s going to be a long, slow climb to get the place back to anything like it was. However, I can guarantee that we have more comics than when you were in last.
