Guild Wars Novel Away!

Guild Wars

Yesterday, I wrapped up my first draft of the Guild Wars novel I’m writing and shipped it off to my editor and the fine people at ArenaNet. I had a lot of fun working on it, and I think it all coalesced into a fine tale in the end.

According to Simon & Schuster’s website, the book is due out February 23, 2010. I don’t know if that’s carved in stone quite yet, but it’s as good a guess as any.

Much as I loved working on the book, it’s a huge relief to have it out the door. I’m sure, given the nature of such tie-in novels, that it will come back for revisions, but I’m thrilled to know that the bulk of the work is complete.

Now I’m going to take a couple days to pay bills, maybe get my taxes going (I filed for an extension), and tackle another couple details that need to be knocked down. Then it’s back to the keyboard to wring Amortals out of my brain. It’s been lurking there far too long and needs to be let out.

    Congrats, Matt!

Guild Wars is a great world to write in. Plenty of action and wahoo!

I’m on the last chapter of my novel, but then will be spending another two weeks revising (and cutting) before I can collapse. I’m looking forward to that.

    Congratulations, again!

Thanks, Rob! And good luck to you. I can’t wait to read your novel too!

[...] first is going to be titled Guild Wars: Fall of Ascalon by Matt Forbeck.  He just shipped off his first draft, and he speculates that the book might be released February 23, 2010.  Well [...]

Cool! Did you listen to the game soundtrack while you wrote? Just curious, because I love the music in Guild Wars.

  5. Matt Forbeck on July 6th, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Sadly, I don’t have a copy of that. I’ll have to track one down.

  6. Andre on July 8th, 2009 at 2:32 am

Just to note, there are four soundtracks. Not sure if any are sold individually – I just know they come with the Collector’s Editions of the game (though Eye of the North doesn’t have a Collector’s Edition – so not sure how to get that one). I only have Nightfall myself, but I love all the soundtracks.

    Better yet. Thanks!

  8. Fred on July 16th, 2009 at 5:43 am

FYI: apart from with the Collector’s Editions, all soundtracks are also for sale online, at DirectSong.com (that’s also how to get the EOTN soundtrack):

    Prophecies: https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/product/GW101
    Factions: https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/product/GWF101
    Nightfall: https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/product/GWNF101
    EOTN: https://www.directsong.com/index.php#/shop/product/GWEN101

    Looking forward to those novels…

Can you tell us if your do the 2nd book too, or is Rob King?( Just asking because that’s what i read on some sites)

  12. Matt Forbeck on August 6th, 2009 at 12:54 pm

I am not at liberty to say anything more than has already been publicly revealed. Hopefully that will change in the next month or two.

  13. Andre on August 6th, 2009 at 1:20 pm

@ Zach: Just to let you know, Rob King writing the second book is just a theory based on his above comment, his upcoming book “Dragonrise” (I think is the name) (which mysteriously disappeared from his site!) having the same publisher and that book’s title being possibly related to GW2 (the awakening of the Ancient Dragons).

And hopefully it will change soon (and next month is the PAX convention which Anet will be at, so maybe :D ).

  14. Zach on August 6th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

When will you be able to release info about the contents of the book, like what is happening in the book, or how soon is this after Eye of the North, years wise.

  15. Zach on August 6th, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Andre- I just checked PAX website and Ncsoft is going to be, i didn’t see Anet tho, but that might mean Anet is in Ncsoft both.

  16. Andre on August 6th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

I’d love to know how many years after EN the book will be, I’m sure the actual fall of Ascalon (the portion which is already known of its fall) would be about 12 years after EN (what we know, the war ended 30 years after the Searing – so year 1080 AE).

As for PAX, Regina and Martin have both said they’d be there this year. Though if they have new info for there, is unknown – we just know we’ll get info this year. I’d assume PAX will at least have info on Matt’s book. If not the second or even all three.

  17. Matt Forbeck on August 6th, 2009 at 11:09 pm

I can’t say anything more about the book at the moment without clearance from ArenaNet. They won’t keep you hanging forever, though, and with luck your patience will be rewarded soon.

  18. Zach on August 7th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Are you trying to hint that we will get some info soon like this month or at PAX.

  19. Lydon on August 9th, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Not going to hold my breath for info =P I was doing that for Guild Wars 2 info but we haven’t been given a morsel since the original game announcement!

Anyway, I’m very excited to read the novel. Exciting times.

Just a quick question, will it be sold in Canada?
    Looking forward to it! :)

  21. Matt Forbeck on August 31st, 2009 at 9:37 pm

It should be available in Canada, but I honestly don’t know for sure. That’s up to Simon & Schuster and their contract with ArenaNet.

  22. Maggie on September 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Any idea on how much the book will cost? :)

  23. Matt Forbeck on September 9th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

I can’t say for sure, but I suspect US $7.99.

  24. Greg on December 15th, 2009 at 4:51 am

I’m really excited to read your book Matt, maybe even as excited as I am to play GW2. Ever since GW1 came out, I’ve been a HUGE fan of the Charr. They were one of the only enemies to genuinely intimidate me in any game, and everything about them just says “badass”.

Other than the small band of rebels in EOTN joining the humans, I never really understood how Charr and Humans could actually be co-operating in GW2, hopefully this will clear things up, and I hope the other two books are at least partially based on the Charr, though I’m sure they will actually be made to cover the backgrounds of the other races instead. Oh well!

I’ll definately be picking up a copy of this on release day! Kudos!

  25. Matt Forbeck on December 15th, 2009 at 8:30 am

Thanks, Greg! I think you’ll see a lot of your questions answered in the book.

  26. Shaun on January 10th, 2010 at 5:40 pm

I heard about this book quite a while back, just today I had to do a lot of internet searching to finally find a source of information on this (your blog) I’m glad the supposed release date is so soon (I don’t have much to read before I’m bookless.)

  27. Miles on February 17th, 2010 at 7:26 pm

The estimated release date is next week! Is there an official date yet? Also, will there be some certain time the book will actually be released in stores, similar to Harry Potter book releases where people line up for hours to get the first copies? Because if there are, I will be there.

    Can’t wait!

  28. Matt Forbeck on February 17th, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Thanks! The book has been delayed a bit. There should be an official announcement about it very soon. I’ll post something here when that happens.

  29. Miles on February 17th, 2010 at 9:38 pm

Well darn, that was one of the birthday presents I was looking forward to receiving on the 25th. Well, I’ll just have to keep waiting.

Thanks for the info Matt! I’ll keep checking back for updates.
