I just learned that James Perham died on May 31 of heart failure. I first met James many years ago when he was working for Cliff “Gideon” Van Meter at Starchilde Publications (publishers of Justifiers and Guardians) and back in the late ’80s/early ’90s. He later spent time working in comics with Valiant and Acclaim and had the singular honor of being the last Acclaim Comics employee, going down with the ship. Still, he didn’t let that stop him.

I saw James at Gen Con a couple years ago. He was working with a company that was about to bring a South American collectible card game into America. I don’t know whatever happened to that game. Still, it was great to see James again and hear his laugh that one last time.

  1. Wow, I totally missed this entry when you originally wrote it. I’ll have to write a piece on Cinerati about him. I never knew him, but Guardians is one of those great independent jems of the 80s/90s rpg scene. It wasn’t the best superhero rpg ever made, but it worked and it had some great ideas. And the art I liked the best in the book was the more cartoony art, the art that was also in the one adventure for the game, rather than the “topical” art in the book.

This is sad news. I would have loved to talk with him some time.

  3. Yeah, he and Gideon/Cliff were a lot of fun. Cliff is still kicking around, doing freelance art. Somebody (was it Jason Blair?) had even come up with a plan to publish an updated version of Justifiers a few years back, but I don’t think it ever happened.

I think you would have enjoyed chatting with James. I always did.
