ICv2.com has posted an open letter from Peter Adkison, CEO of Gen Con and Hidden City Games (and all-round great guy), about Gen Con’s entry into Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. If you’re interested in the show (and what self-respecting gamer wouldn’t be?), it’s worth the read.

Peter is a great guy and I wish him and the show continued success. One of the things I’ll miss about being in the pen and paper field is the justifiable expense of attending GenCon and experiencing the rush and excitement of the big show.

As I do fewer things in tabletop games and more in other fields, I have a harder time justifying going to the industry shows too. Gen Con is on my schedule forever though. It—and all the friends I see there—has been a part of my life too long to give it a pass.

Does that mean that the new Little Fears is gone the way of the dodo?
I keep telling myself I’m getting out of pen and paper, but they keep pulling me back in….

I’d rather it not.
LFNE will likely be the last thing I do in the p&p field. But that’s a personal project, for myself and the fans.

Never say never, Jason. It’s a long life, and you may get the itch again. Even Monte Cook is putting out a new D&D PDF after officially leaving the field last year.

I actually had “Never say never, though” in my original post but I removed since it seemed like a non-sequitur given how I ended the comment.

Even I am a case of Never Say Never.
I thought I was done after 7th Sea folded, but people just keep putting out such interesting worlds….
Still, at this point I want to try and get my first novel out the door and start working on a second.

Good luck with that, Rob!

Very happy to see you talking about this calmly and rationally… Peter’s pretty savvy as a businessman so I’m sure the show will do just fine, provided people continue to support to show and attend.
I was just telling Rick the other day that you were going to be walking the red carpet pretty soon!

I suspect that panic might get a foothold in the giant echo chamber of the Internet, but I don’t see a call for it here.
As for the red carpet, the Mutant Chronicles premiere is still many months off, but I’m looking forward to it. Give Rick my best. I haven’t seen him since the holidays.

There’s been some “oh noes, should I go to Gen Con this year?” stuff over on RPG.net, but that’s been balanced by people pointing out that even if the con were canceled, there would be plenty of gamers that would still show up and have fun.
To be honest, most of the fun I’ve had the past couple years involves pickup games in the lobby of our hotel.
…and the open bar from 5-7 every night last year in the hotel lounge. Whew.

Glad to hear wiser heads are prevailing. I’m going to be there either way, and I’m sure Peter and his crew will be too.
