A talented group of indie filmmakers from Chicago—a group known as Reactor 88 Studios—are working on a proof of concept for a film based on my Brave New World roleplaying game. I sat down and had dinner with them in December and met the cast and crew, led by producer Darren Orange. They have a tremendous amount of energy and a real passion for the project, and I’m excited to watch them pull it all together.

January 4th, 2007 at 12:23 pmI wish them the best of luck. Looking at their website, I am left with a couple of questions. First, are they planning a feature film or a television/d2dvd pilot? Second, what medium will they be using? Third, what type of computer/software will they be using during the digital intermediary process? What sound editing programs will they use (ProTools is excellent but not cheap, Final Cut Pro can do a great deal with sound and image editing)?
I have been really impressed with the Mid-West this past year, especially with the initiative some filmmakers have shown in regards to genre fiction. The Midnight Chronicles project of Fantasy Flight Games and this project show that it isn’t always necessary to wait for someone else to do the projects you want to see.
This past season’s release of Heroes is kind of a mixed blessing for this project if they are looking for TV distribution. The success of the show definitely proves there is a superhero ready audience available, and BNW is very different from Heroes narratively. On the other hand, purchasing execs might not get far enough in the conversation to notice the differences.
Exciting news!

Are you reading Civil War?
It is very BNW and makes me lament BNW even more, as does Heroes.Great news Matt!

January 4th, 2007 at 1:31 pmHi Christian:
I don’t know the particulars of the production, but Darren stops by here occasionally and may chip in with the answers. Alternatively, you can ask on the forums at Reactor 88’s website.
To answer some of your questions, though, they’re planning a feature film. The “pilot” is a proof-of-concept piece to show investors and other stakeholders to garner support for the team. I believe they’ll shoot with HD camcorders, but I don’t know for sure.

January 4th, 2007 at 1:33 pmThanks, Blaze and Barak. I have been reading Civil War, and yeah, it brings back lots of memories for me. I’ve yet to start watching Heroes, even though I set my ReplayTV to grab episodes. It’s just been too busy. At this point, I may wait for the Season 1 DVDs to hit and then catch up from there.

January 6th, 2007 at 10:52 amHello, the proof of concept will be shot on a AG-HVX200 and we will be using Avid Xpress Pro HD to do all of the editing. The camera might change. Also as far as audio goes, for right now, we will be using simple DV camcorders to record extra audio as they do not compress the audio tracks and they are inexpensive. We will use pro tools so long as we can get access to it. Any other questions please feel free to post on my website. I try very hard to update the website daily. Thanks for the support.
