New Blood Bowl Game Coming Dungeon Crawling
Jun 28

Here’s something for fans of both comic books and the Worst Case Scenarios Survival Handbook. Quirk Books has The Batman Handbook and The Superman Handbook. Be sure to click on the “View an interior spread of this book” links to bask in these books’ full glory.

The duotone artwork and layout reminds me of the interiors of the DC Heroes Roleplaying Game that Mayfair Games published back in the mid-80s. In college, I spent one summer running around Chicago and Milwaukee, playing demos for which Mayfair paid me cash and expenses, spreading the gospel of Greg Gorden’s logarithmic system.

Anyhow, these are too funny. I hope I spot some copies floating around Comic-Con next month. If so, I don’t think I’ll be able to resist snatching them up.

Whatever happened to that game? :-)

Getting paid to play Greg Gorden’s DC Heroes? That’s like having your cake and eating it too. The second edition of the game is still my favorite superhero system. The “genre” rules in the back also provide the perfect framework for a “universal” system.

I really can’t praise the system enough. One might think I too was paid for my love of the game, but alas not.

Josh: Mayfair and DC parted ways long ago, perhaps when going through bankruptcy proceedings, as many licenses can terminate when that happens. West End had a DC Universe RPG for a while, but that ended when the company went through bankruptcy. (Perhaps there’s a theme there.)

Pulsar Games picked up the system and relabeled it MEGS (the Mayfair Exponential Games System). They used it in a superhero RPG called Blood of Heroes, which came out in 2002. The company was sold in 2003, but the new owners don’t seem to have done much with it since.

Christian: It’s a great game, and intuitive once you make it over the hurdle of using logarithms. Greg’s a great designer, and I think it’s his finest system work.

Josh is just funnin’ ya. He is one of the “Gurus” of MEGS.

Aha! I see if I’d dug any further on the Pulsar Games site I would have seen that Josh wrote for the game.

So, Josh, whatever happened to the new owners?

Greg Gorden is one of my heroes. I played a convention game of TORG with him and won best role-player. It’s been the highlight of my convention going career.

Sadly he’s sort of fallen off the face of the earth. I tried to find and contact him when I was doing the GODSEND Agenda. I wanted him to write a POV for it but could find a contact anywhere.

    The Gorden is the greatest

Hi Jerry! If you’re still trying to get ahold of Greg, shoot me your best e-mail address, and I’ll pass it on to him. I just got back in touch with him again myself.

The new owners have some ideas packed away, but the primary delay with releasing anything has been with the former owners of PGI not having their ducks in a row enough to properly transfer over the legal papers for some time.

I’ve got some things in the cooker, but that’s all they are; things. Very nondescript at that.

  9. 9. Matt Forbeck Says:

That’s some delay. Here’s hoping they manage to work things out and you can serve up those things soon.
