Wicked Good

My wife and I ran down to Chicago on Saturday night to see Wicked, the musical based upon Gregory Maguire’s book. It tells the story of the Wizard of Oz from the point of view of the Wicked Witch of the West. We loved it.

I’m a sucker for children’s literature—especially with strong elements of the fantastic. Things like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Phantom Tollbooth, and so on. Wicked takes the two-dimensional characters from the original tale and inflates them with life. Plus, the music is wonderful, and the talented actors engaged the crowd through every moment.

Edit: Included author’s name.

  1. The XXX you’re looking for is Gregory Maguire, Matt. I agree that Wicked is a pretty darn incredible muscial – we saw it here in Toronto last year. That scene at the end of the first act is amazing!

I want to read the book when I get a chance – I liked all of the twists on Oz that Maguire threw in. He’s got a number of other similar retellings of classics and fairy tale’s too – Mirror, Mirror (Snow White), Confessions of a Wicked Stepsister (Cinderella), and Lost (apparently A Christmas Carol). There’s a sequel to Wicked too: Son of a Witch.

  3. Whoops! Thanks, Don. I meant to look up Maguire’s name before I posted the note, but I forgot.

I haven’t read any of Maguire’s books yet, but they’re now on my list!

  5. I saw Wicked when it played in TO last year, and am hoping to see it again this year. It really was a very enjoyable production.

Maguire’s books are VERY different from the stage production. It’s not too much to say they share almost nothing other than the basic plot. I actually enjoyed the musical more than the original book, but that’s just my opinion.
