The New Site

Welcome to the new version of Forbeck.com. I’d been having troubles with my old site. When I upgraded to Movable Type 3.1, it didn’t go smoothly. I broke a few things with my customization. Then my brother-in-law told me he was getting out of the webhosting business, so it was time to find a new host.

After some poking around, I settled with the fine people at BlueHost.com. One of the best parts about the service (besides the price and the silly amount of features) is a one-click installation of WordPress. When I set up Forbeck.com last year, WordPress didn’t pop up on my radar. The latest version (1.5), though, has everything I wanted and more.

I’ll be tweaking the site a bit over the next few weeks. In the meantime, let me know what you think of the new look. I’m especially curious about the pop-open menus on the right side of the screen.

  1. I’ve been very happy having WordPress power my blog for a while now.

I like the cleaner, lighter look of this theme. And while I like the *concept* of the pop-open side navigation elements, the *reality* of having all the relevant links hidden isn’t my first choice. YMMV. ๐Ÿ™‚

One suggestion: Set up a redirect on your RSS feed to point subscribers to the old one (index.xml) to the new one (wp-rss2.php).

  3. Hi Kevin:

Thanks for the note. The change finally located through my DNS server, and now I can see the sight too. I understand your point about the pop-open menus. I’m still playing with the whole thing.

  6. Hey, Matt. I went with WP when I redesigned my site as well. You running into problems with spammers because you don’t require registration for comments?

  8. Hi Kameron:

I haven’t gotten a single bit of spam yet, but I suspect that’s because I broke all the old links other than to the front page. The spambots likely just haven’t found me yet. Still, I set every entry to “no pings.” I was getting lots of trackback spam over the past few months, and that should get rid of that. WP supposedly has all sorts of spam-proofing plugins, and I’m ready to call on them as soon as the situation calls for it.

  10. I am running WordPress on bluehost.com, too, and I would have to say that they are the best host I have had the privilege of working with. I have 4 gigs of space and 100 gigs of transfer. When you compare that to Globat or other Web hosting companies, bluehost really is a good, cheap Web host with excellent customer service and great features.
