I’ve been quietly working on this website for a few weeks now, and it’s time to finally pull the thing’s light from under the bushel and let it shine free. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you like what you see and come back often.

As the end of the year creeps up, lots of people like to make New Year’s resolutions. You’re looking at mine. I’ve had lots of requests over the years for an easy way for people who enjoy my work to keep up with what I’m doing. That’s what this site is for.

Of course, just setting up a website isn’t much of a resolution. The real trick is to keep it alive, to make it worthwhile for people to stop back here regularly. To that end, I’m aiming at weekly updates.

Honestly, I’m going to shoot wide of that target sometimes. I’m only human, and other parts of my life may take precedence from time to time. If that happens, feel free to try to keep me honest. If you find you’re missing your weekly fix, I’ll be flattered.

My plan is to have something up every Wednesday. To start things off, I have a fun little PDF I’ll post on the 24th as a Christmas present. Stop by then and have a look.

  1. Great start, Matt! Just reading about your current projects made me feel tired. Then I got to the FAQ where you talk about writing a thousand words an hour, and I felt even more tired. (A thousand words is a good day’s work for me.) At the bottom of the FAQ I learned that you have five kids — and then I felt exhausted!

Clearly I’ll have to build up my stores of energy just to visit your site each Wednesday.

  2. Thanks, Alan! I hope life’s treating you well these days. I’d love to know what you’re up to as well.

  3. Ooh, spiffy. I so need another website to keep up with, too. :) Glad to see you’ve got it up and running, and I look forward to checking back regularly.

  4. How do you like Movable Type? I’ve been thinking about side-grading jefftidball.com from the current SSI’ed Blogger Frankenstein that it is, but I can’t decide between the various software packages I’ve been reading about.

  5. Thanks, Michelle!

Hi Jeff: I like Movable Type just fine. It’s a bit more of a learning curve than Blogger, but it forced me to finally crack CSS a bit. I recommend it.

This entire site is actually set up in Movable Type, including the static pages. That means I can make changes to them through my web browser and people can search those pages via the search function on the front page. I like the built-in “Notifications by E-mail” function too, as I can use it as a broadcast-only mailing list when I post important bits to the site.

  6. Excellent. I look forward to reading more in the coming year. I’ve added forbeck.com to the links on my blog as well!

  7. Thanks, Gareth. That reminds me: I should set up a list of links to sites like yours too. It’s on the “To Do” list!

  8. Greetings Matt!

I’m glad you told me about this site. It’s really cool! Now I can get more of your writings with out paying for them…KIDDING! I am looking forward to reading everything you put on here though. To everyone who doesn’t know… Matt really is a hard working man! Best to you Matt, I’ll check back soon!

    Patrick

  9. Matt, I like your website in general, although I was disappointed at first when I did a Search for “newcomb” that resulted in nothing. Then I realized that your website tracks your work from 1991 on, which makes any role we had together something like a “prequel.” Or a “forward.” Or a lame “prologue.” Anyway, you know what I mean. You still are one of the most clever writers I know, and when I read your work it sounds like you speaking to me, like the Matt I know. Keep up the good work! – Harv
